Class Descriptions:
(not all classes are necessarily offered all the time)

Beginning Middle Eastern Dance: No prior experience needed. Basic techniques, body positioning, finger cymbals, veils, isolation layering and more will be covered in this energetic class.

Intermediate Middle Eastern Dance: This class is designed for dancers who have taken one or more beginning sessions and are ready to delve into new technique, complex layering, transitions, and performance skills. Bring your finger cymbals!

Advanced Middle Eastern Dance: A class designed for dancers that love a challenge... focusing on drilling complicated techniques, tricky combinations, improvisation, expressive performance skills, dramatic veil work and so much more!

Gypsy Fusion: This class will introduce Turkish Rom (Gypsy) technique, as well as ways to fuse it with Spanish stylings. Dancers will work with fans, full skirts, finger cymbals, and more. Designed for dancers who have taken at least some classes before. I hope to next offer this class from April - June 2005.

Middle Eastern Dance for Kids: This class is very age appropriate, and teaches young dancers about listening to music, rhythms, finger cymbals, veilwork, Egyptian cane dancing, fan techniques and skirtwork. We will have a special focus on Turkish Rom (Gypsy) style dance, which is high-energy fun! A great workout, dress-up time, and music & dance education all rolled into one! Six week session will go from Oct. 12 - Nov. 17 at A Pure Space in Arcata. See above!

Special Topics: These are classes in areas not covered in any of the technique classes, such as introductions to Khaliji and Persian music and movement styles, amongst others. They are of no extra charge to any students who have purchased a class card, and are $7.00 drop-in to all others. They are offered periodically throughout the year and I will post them here when they're coming up!

WHAT SHOSHANNA'S STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HER

The following comments are from mid-semester student evaluations of Shoshanna as a member of the dance faculty at Humboldt State University, where she has instructed Middle Eastern Dance as a 2 unit course in the Theatre Arts Department since Spring of 1998.

Most students who enroll in this course have never studied this dance form, and many have never studied any dance at all. There are usually about 45 to 50 people in the course, which is held in a lovely dance studio at the University. The class meets for 2 hours once a week with four additional 3 hour weekend workshops on a variety of special topics. They learn basic techniques (with challenges incorporated for dancers with more training or experience) and learn one to two choreographies for performance in an end of the semester recital featuring all of the Theatre Arts dance classes.

  • "This class rocks!" (Spring 2001)
  • "I really appreciate her willingness to bring outside instruction & influences to her students. Shoshanna is a definite benefit to the diverse courses offered in Theatre Arts." (Fall 2001)
  • "Shoshanna is very enthusiastic about this dance, and we had so many opportunities to experience the culture right here in Arcata & in other places in California, at different performances, etc. that Shoshanna was always sure to tell us about." (Fall 2001)
  • "Very positive instructor! Shoshanna is extremely enthusiastic and makes the experience fun. She is very light-hearted and laid back - makes you want to learn and try hard. This course is awesome and Shoshanna is a wonderful teacher! This is my first Middle Eastern dance class ever, very positive experience. I plan on taking this class again next semester!" (Fall 2001)
  • "Instructor is highly skilled and very enthusiastic about the subject matter. She fostered an environment notably free from discrimination based on skill, gender, or any other factor." (Fall 2001)
  • "I think that it is a wonderful course and that Shoshanna is an incredibly gifted and talented teacher. I have taken other Middle Eastern Dance classes and have learned much more from Shoshanna. I believe that she is the teacher that will help me become the great Middle Eastern Dancer that I want to be." (Spring 2001)
  • "Shoshanna is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this art form which she loves. She is an amazing instructor with incredible skill. I wish her luck in all her travels and accomplishments, and I look forward to many more performances by her." (Fall 2000)
